GAMMA Obsidian 16mm Review: The Tournament Dark Horse Nobody's Watching

GAMMA has been in the racquet sports game for decades, and their Obsidian 16mm is quietly one of the best tournament paddles available. Here's why the reviews say it deserves more attention.

What the Reviews Say

For this review we synthesized published expert reviews and manufacturer specs, focusing on how this paddle holds up at the 4.5+ level. It's a read of where those sources agree — not a hands-on test.

The analysis weighs what separates a marketing pitch from genuine on-court performance — swing weight, spin potential, and how the paddle behaves under real competitive pressure.

What Stands Out

Here's what reviewers consistently single out as this paddle's strengths:

• The Sensa Poly Core delivers an incredibly plush, comfortable feel that rewards precise shot-making — The Sensa Poly Core delivers an incredibly plush, comfortable feel that rewards precise shot-making
• Textured graphite surface generates surprisingly good spin for a non-raw-carbon paddle — Textured graphite surface generates surprisingly good spin for a non-raw-carbon paddle

• GAMMA's grip quality is best-in-class — their heritage in overgrips and grip tape shows
• Edge guard design is sleek and low-profile without sacrificing protection — Edge guard design is sleek and low-profile without sacrificing protection

Where It Falls Short

No paddle is perfect, and the sources are clear about the trade-offs:

• Brand awareness is lower than Selkirk/JOOLA which means fewer online reviews to reference
• Power output is good but not elite — if you want maximum drive speed, look elsewhere
• Limited colorway options compared to competitors who release new designs quarterly

Who Should Buy This Paddle?

This paddle has real strengths in specific areas, but it's not a universal recommendation. Think honestly about your play style and priorities before committing — and if possible, demo it before you buy.

The Bottom Line

The GAMMA Obsidian 16mm is a paddle that outperforms its brand recognition. If this had a Selkirk or JOOLA logo on it, everyone would be talking about it. The Sensa Poly Core is rated one of the most comfortable hitting experiences in its class, and the 16mm thickness nails the power-control balance. GAMMA's grip technology is genuinely the best in the industry — an underrated advantage during long tournament days. At $159, it's positioned below the premium flagships while performing at or near that level. If you're a competitive player willing to try something the crowd isn't using, the Obsidian might become your secret weapon.
